[edit] Introduction

The Franciscans were founded by Saint Francis of Assisi (1182 - 1226-10-04) and Saint Clare of Assisi (1194 - 1253-08-11). The Franciscan Orders include, for Roman Catholics, the Friars Minor (Order of Friars Minor (OFM), Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (OFM Cap) and Order of Friars Minor Conventual (OFM Conv)), the Poor Clares and the Third Order. Anglican Franciscans may join one of the three Anglican Franciscan Orders and other protestants may join the Order of Ecumenical Franciscans. Those in northern Europe may be interested in Assisi-Kredsen, The Saint Francis Ecumenical Society (SFES) - Translation, or the Ecumenical Franciscan Society from Eastern Europe (with Lutheran, Catholic,Orthodox, Anglican and free Protestant members). A "radically interfaith" group called the Fourth Order of Francis and Clare is also available.
